Combining Writing and Technology to create Deeper, more Immersive Stories, Worlds and Experiences

About

Niall Austin is an award-winning, Dublin-based Writer and Technologist, whose work is steeped in the art of storytelling.

Each of his projects, marked by a distinct narrative-driven core, is a tapestry woven with threads of innovative technology and creative writing. Building on recent shows ‘PL-AI’ and ‘Deep Fake’, his forthcoming show, ‘7 Deadly Sims’, is a celebration of this synthesis, offering audiences not just a show but an adventure, where the lines between performer and spectator blur into a shared experience.

Niall’s journey in music, coloured by partnerships with legends such as Ronnie Drew and Moya Brennan, echoes an eclectic approach to the arts. From the stages with ‘Brian’,  the band he co-founded with Ken Sweeney, to the creation of interactive experiences for notable brands and artists including Yoko Ono and the Olympic Movement, Niall’s work always circles back to the story at the heart, whether it’s told through a melody, poem installation, or a digital character’s journey.

On this website, you’re invited to explore the worlds he creates, where technology serves not just to impress but to engage and inspire. It’s a space that reflects Niall’s ideology: that at the core of innovation is the timeless power of a good tale, well told.

Theatre

In the realm of theatre, my work endeavours to quietly beckon audiences into a world where the line between technology and traditional storytelling blurs. Plays like the critically acclaimed ‘PL-AI’ and innovative ‘Deep Fake’ can subtly invite discovery and participation, unveiling the magic of audience-led narratives shaped by AI in real-time. This approach not only redefines the role of the viewer but also showcases the seamless integration of digital advancements into the fabric of live performance. Here, the appeal of each production is something to be unearthed, a journey of exploration where technology serves as a silent partner in the age-old art of storytelling, offering a fresh perspective on what theatre can be in the digital age.

Music

Within Niall’s music, the essence of storytelling takes centre stage, manifesting through a rich tapestry of sound that spans genres from rock and pop to opera, and from the rhythmic cadences of beat poetry to the defiant chords of punk. Each track is crafted to captivate and resonate, drawing listeners into a world where the narrative power of music reigns supreme. The aim is to celebrate the sheer joy and emotional journey that great song-writing can evoke, creating an experience that’s both diverse and deeply personal. It’s in this eclectic mix that audiences find their own stories reflected in the melodies, discovering compelling tracks that speak to the myriad facets of the human condition.

Poetry

Poetry unveils a realm where words transcend their mere form to become vessels of profound emotion and insight. Here, the published works extend beyond the page, reaching into the realms of advertising and beyond, where the rhythmic ebb and flow of verse captures the essence of human experiences and sentiments. This poetry, both published and utilized in various mediums, invites readers to pause and reflect, to find within the cadences and imagery a resonance with their own lives. The verses serve not only as a mirror to the soul but also as a bridge between the abstract and the tangible, demonstrating the versatile power of poetry to convey complex messages and evoke deep feelings in a myriad of contexts.

Technology

Niall’s ‘technology’ works aim to take the User on a journey through unique landscapes shaped by ground-breaking developments in digital interaction and immersive experiences. Central to this exploration is the pioneering work in a focus on emerging technologies such as Gesture Recognition and Motion Control, which redefines the boundaries of human-computer interaction, allowing for more intuitive and natural engagement with digital environments.

This cutting-edge approach forms the backbone of the ‘7 Deadly Sims’ show, where augmented reality is given ‘Context’, transforming passive observation into an active, participatory adventure. Beyond the theatrical realm, this technology has been seamlessly integrated into over 100 mobile games, interactive installations, and 360 VR films, each application offering a unique doorway into virtual worlds where the lines between the real and the digital blur. Here, technology is not just a tool but a companion on a journey through the vast possibilities of modern storytelling and interactive art.
